Cuba: the Latin American Crimea
Diego Martin Velázquez Caballero
Perhaps there is no Latin American emblem as significant as Cuba represents it. The defense of the Argentine Malvinas is an act of supreme courage, but Cuba's resistance to imperialist ambition is immeasurable. David against Goliath is a brief metaphor for the infinite dignity that the Cuban revolution has manifested. Beyond ideological conflicts, Cuba personifies for Latin America a bulwark of identity. The last possession of the Spanish empire is also a watchword of life. Cuba is the other Spanishness, the utopia of a revolutionary and social republic, secular, plural and significant. The United States has only enslaved Latin America and Cuba represents Spartacus who has managed to wound the American colossus.
The blockade of Cuba must end. The oppression of the powerful over the weak is only ignominy and, therefore, the world is with the Cuban revolution. Robert Pastor has marked the expiration of anti-communism in globalization; Yet US imperialism, like an old and foolish Cyclops, continues to pursue the Bolshevik Moby Dick even in the soup flies. The pandemic has revealed the validity of many kinds of life, but it demonstrates the profound crisis that liberalism holds: Anglo-Saxon individualism kills more people than any kind of socialism.
Latin America, and particularly Mexico, must strengthen diplomatic relations with Cuba at whatever cost. The Gulf of Mexico has been a lock for regional development and growth derived from the blockade, but US domination would be more serious if Cuba loses sovereignty. The United States knows the value of Cuba beyond geopolitical positions, it is enough to observe the preference of North American society for Cuban immigration to the detriment of others. Education, science, sports and health; they are successful policies that Cuba implements and exchanges. Just look at the group of athletes, doctors and different professionals who live in the United States and were trained on the island.
There are plenty of historical reasons to show that the freedom of Cuba is the least important thing to US imperialism. True totalitarianism is North American imperialism, an absolutism unparalleled in the history of empires, Ernesto Guevara is the Christ of the Nazarene compared to the Himmler that any president of the United States could personalize. North America has lost the battle for the historical sense of liberalism and it is the natural balance that makes Cuba's subsistence and her resistance pertinent. The Democratic Party could change things, but it is more interested in confusing the world, in conspiring to sustain a hegemony that has the seconds counted.
The problem is not Latin America but the West, particularly an Anglo-Saxon culture that does not give in its capacity for interventionism and manipulation to get the most out of things. Anglo-Saxon individualism simply drags the world to its destruction and, therefore, utopian islands like Cuba deserve to be defended despite the socialist regime. Latin America and Africa did not seem to exist for the West and the United States, which have exercised extreme colonialism, said carelessness in geopolitical management is a sign of historical clumsiness, now Africa advances thanks to Islam and Latin America will progress if it soon abandons the false anti-communist rhetoric.
If North America were to eliminate the blockade on the Cuban island, Caribbean socialism would have disappeared a long time ago and a liberal regime would be presented that would lay the foundations of a different capitalism, without taking into account the enormous development and economic benefit that it would mean for the region of the Gulf of Mexico and the Latin American Caribbean. Together with the United States, a development model capable of empowering everyone could be formed. The economic blockade is beneficial to the anarchist liberalism of the United States and the corrupt conservatism of Latin America. As long as the blockade against Cuba persists, the Latin American populist movement will have reasons to sue and exhibit Yankee imperialism with justified reasons. Cuba is the scapegoat for maintaining an anti-communist struggle that has lost meaning and further confuses the internal issues of the United States. Cuba, like Latin America, requires better treatment from the United States and a multilateral international relationship.
